THE HORIZONTAL GRID
The first version of this archetypal design, devised by Edward Young, appeared in 1935 with the launch of Penguin Paperbacks. The design was refined and perfected by Jan Tschichold, who introduced rigorous typographic standards. Examples of his work are at left.
